Q: Can the Bible and Book of Mormon both be right?

Posted by Ask a Mormon On 7:35 PM

A: Absolutely. We believe that both are true, that both are the word of God: we believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God. (Click here for other articles of our faith.)

I have heard quite a few arguments against the Book of Mormon. Some people love to attack its authenticity, and there are respected scholars on both sides of the issue. I applaud those whose scholarly work seeks to determine the truth. But a truth as important as this only comes from the Source of all truth.

My answer to anyone wondering about the Book of Mormon is simple: read the Book of Mormon with an open mind, an open heart, and ask God. Give it a try--God will answer you, in a way only God can, that it is true. Don't take my word for it, take His.

I have done it. It works.

  1. CurtisHenrie Said,

Being in the English master's program and being involved in loads of research, I can attest that you can find evidence to any argument you want. The problem with many arguments today, is they are so very one sided to the evidence they look at. I have been reading Hugh Nibley's collection, Lehi in the Desert, The World of the Jaredites, and Their were Jaredites, which I believe is a good introduction into literature that proves the Book of Mormon is true. One question that begs to be asked of those who seek to disprove the Book of Mormon is have they read the Book of Mormon? That for one is the greatest evidence out there that it can coexist with the Bible in veracity. What hangs us up most of the time is interpretation. If we interpret the Bible one way, it seems incapable of coexisting with the Book of Mormon as established and complimentary Christian doctrine, but you can interpret it in other ways that seem to be just as right without causing contradictions. The important things to consider are why do we read the Bible and/or Book of Mormon, what does it mean for them to both be true, and what am I going to do with that knowledge? The answers to those questions will determine what side of the fence we stand on when it comes to this argument.
