Q: Why are you called Mormons?

Posted by Ask a Mormon On 10:03 PM

Of course, the best way to learn more about Mormons is to talk to your Mormon friends or sit down with a Mormon missionary. But until then, ask, read, and enjoy!

A: The short answer is that our nickname "Mormons" comes from one of our books of scripture, The Book of Mormon. We believe that, like the Bible, The Book of Mormon contains the words of God given to ancient prophets. The Book of Mormon is a collection of such writings, compiled by a prophet/historian named Mormon, who lived on the American continent 400 years after Christ. The name Mormon has become a nickname for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its members.
